Insulating success

Founded over 16 years ago in its current headquarters in Liverpool, UK, McKennas Insulation offers its clients years of proven experience. The generations of expertise it employs enable it to provide one of the most thorough and comprehensive ranges of thermal, acoustic and fire insulation solutions in the industry. As well as the marine arena, the organisation is able to provide industrial sectors with thermal insulation and sheet fabrication supply and maintenance services including food suppliers, flour mills, oil refineries and power plants. Trace heating is yet another area of proficiency for McKennas Insulation with its teams of engineers being able to design and install all types of trace heating on storage tanks, pipe work, pumps, refrigeration and removable lagging pads, while the organisation itself has full authorisation for all asbestos projects and has worked on cruise ships and petrochemical areas for the removal of such. Focused on its core markets of ship conversions, repair and specialist d sign services, the company is constantly engaged in contracts for all types of vessels from high speed crafts to ferries, cruise ships, merchant and naval vessels.

Having worked with leading names such as P&O, Stena Line and James Fisher as well as the British MoD and carried out successful projects throughout the UK and Europe, as well as further afield in Australia, Japan and Canada, the company enjoys regular repeat business from an abundance of satisfied customers. Stephen McKenna, managing director of McKennas Insulation highlights its key differentiators in the marketplace: “We run our business as a family entity and pride ourselves on the fact that we have always worked in the field of ship repair and really understand the needs of our clients. Though we hold the necessary academic qualifications and degrees, we were also born into this industry and we breed it, ensuring that our engineers hold the same attitude as our management, with service being of the utmost importance. We successfully work our projects to time critical deadlines and constraints whilst keeping our clients fully informed of any complex issues, which is what our clients rate as our unique selling point.”

Each project is assessed individually to ascertain a client’s exact requirements and scheduling needs, while flying squads of skilled engineers are on hand to provide urgent quay-side, voyage or even round the clock installation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Most recently the company has completed a comprehensive contract on a discovery cruise ship in Spain, which required the company to manufacture a certain amount of the materials in-house itself before shipping them to Barcelona to be joined by its own team of engineers. These two capabilities were ready to meet and board the vessel in dry dock to install 500 square metres of A60 insulation and sheet metal cladding. While onboard, the company also carried out additional boiler works to aid the owner in meeting its dry dock deadline, a target that would have been unobtainable without McKennas Insulation’s expertise.

“We have also recently carried out a six-month refit contract for Harris Pye Marine in Swansea dry docks on their Saga Pearl II cruise vessel,” Stephen notes. “This particular project came with a number of challenges and varied every day in a whole host of different areas. The job simply grew and grew, and we evolved alongside it, decreasing or increasing labour depending on the requirements of each area we covered. It is important to us that we maintain our high level of service and we have the same flexible team of people employed the whole time. They know how we aim to interact with the ship owner and therefore are ready to move as and when the time calls for it.”

Indeed, while its engineers are already highly skilled in their individual trades, the organisation recently sent eight of its staff to complete an NVQ level 2 in workplace health and safety. A further £50,000 of its own capital has been placed in McKennas Insulation’s office facilities with headquarters having been upgraded and moved to a more modern unit that boasts more natural light, greater recycling facilities and more advanced machinery to enhance its products.

Looking to the future, the company has plans to increase its influence in the offshore market while continuing to manufacture its premier products for distribution and service throughout the world. Stephen explains: “Although we do carry out international activities from our facility in Merseyside, we are hoping to establish bases in alternative locations to increase recognition of our products. As both an expert engineering service provider and manufacturer, we feel we offer a high quality product at a very reasonable price, while at the same time helping customers to meet the challenges of the marine industry. For example, this year we were given a very tight time schedule of two weeks by Stena Europe to install over 1200 square metres of A60 insulation on the car deck. We worked around the clock to finish the £360,000 contract four days ahead of schedule as well as carrying out an additional project on board – service that customers have come to expect from McKennas Insulation.”
