People power

Based in the industrial heartland of Sheffield in the UK, Shepcote Engineering is a leading manufacturer of hydraulic cylinders and also provides hydraulic cylinder repair and engineering solutions to sectors such as the marine, offshore oil and gas, mining and civil engineering industries.

A unique advantage for Shepcote’s customers is the company’s deep hole boring, turning and honing capabilities, which are amongst the largest in the United Kingdom. By keeping the manufacturing processes in-house Shepcote ensures costs are minimised, quality control is maximised and prompt deliveries are scheduled. Its factory offers over 25,000 sq ft of production floor with 50 tonnes lifting capability

Furthermore, Shepcote Engineering constantly strives to upgrade and modernise its equipment, to remain at the forefront of hydraulic cylinder manufacture and design. As a result it has a policy of on-going investment in the latest CNC manufacturing and CAD design technology. The company also encourages and welcomes new and existing customers to visit the facilities in Sheffield and see the technology that exists to support their needs and requirements.

Of course, none of this would be possible without a highly skilled, motivated and conscientious workforce. The company prides itself on its people, who reflect its policy of investing in staff through an established training programme. Looking to the future, two new apprentices have been recently employed.

Hydraulic cylinder manufacture
When it comes to the specifics of hydraulic cylinder manufacture, Shepcote produce cylinders with bore sizes up to 1600mm bore and with strokes up to 20m. With over 30 year’s experience providing hydraulic cylinder solutions to industries worldwide, Shepcote Engineering produces bespoke designs to meet exact requirements, regularly supplying cylinders for use in the most arduous and exacting environments, such as offshore and shipboard, dockside, industrial, construction and mining.

Repair
Alongside Shepcote’s manufacturing expertise, is its experience in the repair of standard, heavy duty and special purpose hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, sliding piston accumulations and rotary distributors. The high quality repair service is designed to minimise clients’ downtime and save them money by providing them with a speedy, reliable, comprehensive and cost effective repair experience. As a guarantee of quality, the hydraulic cylinder repairs by Shepcote Engineering are completed in accordance with the latest ISO standards and procedures.

Specialist large capacity machining services Another significant area of expertise for Shepcote is specialist-machining services. These include deep hole boring, turning and honing. Indeed, Shepcote Engineering boasts some of the largest capacity of its type available in the UK. With the capability to turn up to 1500 dia x 13m between centres, deep hole bore up to 1100mm id x 11m between centres and hone up to 1600mm bore tubes up to 30 metres in length, Shepcote Engineering has become a key supplier to all industry sectors, particularly offshore, oil and gas and marine. When it comes to turning, Shepcote is adding to its large capacity machines and is about to take delivery of another CNC lathe – this time one with a 12 metre bed. Skilled machinists provide a fast and cost effective service using their considerable experience to meet the exacting demands of customers.

All of these services are complemented by Shepcote’s general engineering capability, which includes machine refurbishment, plant overhaul, hydraulic engineering, light fabrications and weld reclamation techniques.

As an experienced and committed engineering service provider, Shepcote Engineering works continuously (closing only for bank holidays). Shift patterns are not fixed but are client determined and offer a flexible solution to panic or emergency situations.

Shepcote Engineering is also proud of its ability to work collaboratively with other engineers, specifically focusing on maintenance or production difficulties. Where these working relationships have been established, they have proved to be highly successful. As a consequence, the company’s multi-skilled team’s depth of experience is fundamental to any submission made for retrofit or reverse engineering solutions.

A major contract was recently awarded to Shepcote on the strength of its overall performance. Valued at over £5,000,000 over the next three years, the deal involves the supply of specialist deck handling equipment for six cable handling vessels. Carousel spooling equipment is included in this contract, as well as deck tensioning and associated equipment for ships bound for Brazil.

Another client specialising in the manufacture of ROV Launch and Recovery Systems (LARS) has placed significant orders for sets of marine specification hydraulic cylinders for Shepcote’s ‘A’ Frames and associated deck handling equipment.

Contracts such as these help to maintain Shepcote’s position in the market, but the company is also constantly looking for alternative ways to reach new clients and highlight its capabilities to a broader market. To this end, the company joined forces with NOF Energy, which is a not-for-profit membership organisation, with over 400 members.

NOF Energy is the UK’s most proactive business development organisation working on behalf of companies within the oil, gas, nuclear and offshore renewables sectors. It actively works to identify global opportunities within these sectors and then works with members to help them secure a share of these opportunities. In its last three years its business support services have assisted members to secure an additional £140 million of new business. Shepcote is always keen to pursue new opportunities and has already seen success in the nuclear sector, and is keen to continue this expansion into oil and gas
