A long-term partner

Celebrating 25 years in business in September 2015, Echoship has grown from small beginnings into a third party ship manager and ship owner.

Starting its life in 1990, during some of its formative years Echoship ApS was located in the beautiful surroundings of the old town part of Svendborg in Denmark, 50 metres from the waterfront. The facility was built as early as in 1791 and is one of the oldest buildings in Svendborg.

When Echoship acquired the building in February 2000 it was completely overhauled to meet the demands of a modern shipping company, but with all due respect for the historic touch, of course, and as many details as possible were kept in their original shape.

However, as the company continued to grow and evolve, just over a decade after it was founded Echoship made the decision to relocate even closer to the waterfront, and in December 2006 it moved into a brand new building that was only about 500 metres from the old address. The new office is equipped with all modern facilities, lots of natural light, fresh air and wonderful 180-200 degrees view to the Svendborgsund.

One of the foundations of Echoship as a modern and forward thinking company its approach to management – for example, its current four owners (Kim Gundesen, Steffen Andersen, Henning Jensen and Henning Knudgaard Jensen) are all personally involved in the daily work of the company. They support the other five members of staff, and going forward the partners maintain ambitious plans for further growth and development.

Despite a relatively short history, the company boasts a strong team that not only has years of know-how in its industry, but is also enthusiastic and driven. This, combined with the solid experience and dedication of the entire team enables the business to navigate safely through troubled waters, and at the same time accept new challenges.

The main activity of Echoship is chartering management of coasters in European trade, a service that it offers to ship owners in a package together with full operation, accounting and controlling of all voyage-related income and expenses. Furthermore, the company can also arrange maritime insurance covers, as well as claims handling; it can also arrange for full management, including crew and technical management, the latter of which would be undertaken by a longstanding close business partner.

In addition to its management role, Echoship also works as a competitive broker, with focus on tonnage up to about 10,000 mtdwcc. At the current time, the business manages about 15 coasters in the size from 2500 mt dwcc and up to about 5000 mt dwcc.

The fleet accepts most dry cargo carried at sea with its main activity remaining in the carriage of sawn timber from the Baltic to various destinations in the UK and the European continent; the company also trades in the Mediterranean, and the Black Sea, which tends to be where 4000 and 5000 dwcc ships are traded. Its yearly volume in this specific trade adds up to close to half a million cubic metres and most of it is covered by contracts with very long standing customers.

The other main cargoes handled by Echoship include steel products, fertilizers, construction materials; windmills, project shipments and all kinds of bulk grains, which are all taken from ‘the spot market’.

Indeed, offering large amount of tonnages to the spot market, within a rather small window from 2000- 7000 tons, provides a lot of flexibility, and Echoship finds that its customers appreciate the ability to adapt and change when necessary. Keeping an eye on its partners’ requirements, irrespective of how the market is generally behaving, is something that the organisation prioritises, and this approach, alongside its outstanding reputation for fulfilling its commitments has helped it establish its glowing reputation in the market.

As it enters its second quarter century of business, Echoship’s main goal is to be considered and accepted as a serious long-term partner in coastal shipping. It will pursue this goal by undertaking every aspect of its business in a serious and professional way, and thus uphold the large amount of confidence it has already established with the major ship owners and charterers it already represents. By consistently offering good, reliable service, Echoship will also encourage new business partnerships with other clients, who are all seeking to work with supplier on which they can rely.
